planet22 est un espace d'intervention d'art contemporain qui a été découvert et aménagé en hiver 1999/2000 par Solvej Dufour Andersen et Peter Stoffel. Depuis son premier voyage en mars2000, planet22 s'est lancé douze fois sur orbite. planet22 est une boîte en verre transparent situé au-dessus de l'entrée d'un immeuble. planet22 se trouve ainsi dans une sphère intermédiaire : un entresol qui est suspendu entre l'espace public de la rue et l'espace privée de l'immeuble.
Unser Planet ist unser Zuhause, unser Ausgangspunkt, unsere Weltenmitte. Mit ihm gehen wir auf Reise durch die Welt. Von ihm aus stossen wir in die Welt vor, um uns auf ihn zurueckzuziehen. Von unserem Planeten aus fordern wir die Welt heraus, und wir fliehen vor der Welt auf unseren Planeten.
planet22 investit une structure qui existait déjà, et dont l'objectif n'était pas d'exposer de l'art contemporain. Il s'agissait d'une boîte de publicité donnant sur la rue de Berne. planet22 reprend cette fonction: attirer l'æil, mais propose une autre vision. La disposition de l'espace a été préservée tandis que sa fonction a été élargie. planet22 appartient à un ensemble de constellations architecturales et d'attractions sensorielles (lumières, bruits, odeurs), propres à l'environnement du quartier chaud où elle est située. Les interventions à planet22 proposent un langage et une lecture étrange dans ce contexte ; elles cherchent à inciter un questionnement sur la "culture" visuelle de cette rue et créent des nouvelles interactions, des collisions, qui reflètent ou transforment ce qui nous est familier. planet22 est sans cesse en concurrence avec les autres "attractions" de la rue. Tout dans ce quartier capte l'attention du passant, flâneur ou spectateur potentiel. planet22 entend profiter de l'émulation, de la curiosité propre à un quartier voué au sexe marchand, où le regard et le voyeurisme sont parfaitement de mise.
Die Welt ist die Umgebung unseres Planeten. Der Verkehr zwischen Planet und Welt ist das Leben. Ein Ausbreiten und ein Zusammenfalten, ein Suchen und ein Finden, ein Handeln und ein Betrachten.
planet22 ne peut pas être regardé isolément. planet22 est un plan dans un travelling cinématographique dont elle n'est qu'un élément en plus. Aller voir une exposition à planet22 implique que le spectateur entre dans une logique du promeneur ; celui qui fait des liens et qui cherche des relations entre les différents fragments qui constituent sa mémoire ; celui qui accepte passage, rupture et transition. Contrairement à un monument, rien ne demande que l'on s'arrête. planet22 vient en sus dans ce paysage dans lequel elle évolue, elle constitue une strate supplémentaire.

planet22 crée une situation de laboratoire, des conditions concrètes de travail, de recherche et de production pour les artistes. Nous avons nommé cet espace planet22 pour signifier son autonomie : planet22 fait son propre parcours tout en restant en interaction avec les astres qui gravitent autour d'elle. 22 correspond au numéro de l'immeuble où elle se situe.

planet22 is an intervention space, uncovered and equipped during winter 1999/2000 by Solvej Dufour Andersen and Peter Stoffel. Since its first launch in march 2000, planet22 has been sent on orbit twelve times.
planet22 is a see-through glass showcase situated over the entrance door of an apartment building. The gallery is thus located in an intermediary sphere: a mezzanine perched between the public space of the street and the private space of the building.

planet22 makes use of a pre-existing structure which objective was not to expose contemporary art works. At the outset, it was an advertising window overlooking rue de Berne. planet22 retains the initial function of the space - to attract sight - proposing a different vision. In other words, the space has been preserved and its function enlarged.
planet22 is a niche placed in the midst of architectural constellations and sensorial attractions (lights, sights, sounds, odors) intrinsic to the environment of the red light district. The interventions at planet22 propose a particular language and reading in such a context; they seek to incite questionings on the visual 'culture' of this street and create new interactions, collisions, which reflect or transform in turn what may seem familiar. planet22 constantly enters in competition with the various other 'attractions' of the street. Everything in this neighborhood captures the attention of the passerby, the casual observer or the potential spectator. planet22 employs itself to take advantage of such impetus, snatching the curiosity inherent to a district dedicated to merchandized sex, in which gaze and voyeurism are utterly unobjectionable.

planet22 cannot be apprehended without taking into account the surroundings. planet22 is like a close shot belonging to a cinematographic traveling - and it only constitutes an additional element of its environment. Attending an exhibit at planet22 implies that the spectator adheres to the mental outlook of a strolling individual (be they driving by or passing by); one who makes links and seeks associations between various fragments building up personal memory; one who accepts channels, ruptures and transitions. Here, contrary to a monument, nothing requires a stop. planet22 adds itself to the landscape from which it stems and evolves - a supplementary layer.

planet22 enables equivalent conditions as those in a laboratory studies - concrete conditions of work, research and production for artists.
We have named this space planet22 in order to connote its autonomy: planet22 follows its own routes whilst staying in interaction with everything gravitating around. 22 is the street number of the apartment building.
